Chapter 21

Apartment hunting went well that day for Betty and she found a modest kitchenette apartment for rent in a brownstone located on 122nd Street between Lenox and Seventh Avenue for a meager fifty dollars a week. She’d be able to move in the following week. The only thing the landlord requested was an award letter from a public assistant, and a notarized letter from her present landlord—her Aunt Vera, so she didn’t anticipate any problems; she even gave them a month’s rent in advance, just to secure the kitchenette, and would give them another $200 for security once she moved in.

The rest of the afternoon was long, hard, and depressing while she waited hours inside the crowded HRA Office on 125th Street waiting for her number to be called to see her caseworker. Betty grew uncomfortable and edgy as she sat for hours on the hard mismatched chairs, listening to crying babies or older kids’ mothers yelling at them because of rambunctious behavior. On top of all that, she felt like she was coming down with flu-like symptoms, a runny nose, muscle and back pains, and she felt nauseated, making things even worse. She thought it was her pregnancy and couldn’t wait to get home.

Finally, four hours later, she received the letter that she needed, which took a total of eight minutes after she sat in the cubical with her caseworker.

It was already twenty after five when she got home. Her aunt Vera had already been home nearly an hour. Betty was simply happy she didn’t need to walk around the city for hours like she normally did. Within a week, she would be in her own place and wouldn’t have to be under her aunt’s rules any longer, bringing a slight smile to her face.

Betty greeted her aunt with pleasantries, who, as usual, muttered something low and inaudible and went back inside the kitchen to continue cooking dinner. Betty, her stomach in knots, went straight to her room and closed the door behind her, then walked toward the dresser drawer to take some much-needed pain pills. When she opened the top drawer, she was stricken with total panic when she saw none of her medication was there. She began to throw the entire contents of the drawer on the floor, then pulled frantically on the other drawers repeating the same process to no avail.

Betty stopped long enough to process everything as her chest heaved in and out rapidly as her jaws grinded and her nose began to flare. As if she had an epiphany, Betty balled her fist and stomped hard toward the door and ripped it open. She growled at the top of her voice, “Victor!” and stepped in the hallway and looked in both directions. She leaned forward, opting to check his bedroom first, ripping the door open. His room was empty, and like a madman, she began searching his drawers on the hunt to retrieve what was rightly hers.

“What hell is going on, Annabelle?” screamed her aunt Vera, who stood at the bedroom door.
